What is a prescription diet?

Prescription diets are specially formulated to help aid in slowing down the progression of certain diseases and medical conditions by altering the food's nutritional contents.  Nutritional intervention if often times necessary when animals are diagnosed with some of the diseases listed below. 

Diabetes - High complex carbohydrates, Increase fiber, Moderate caloric content, source of soluable fiber

Urinary tract management - Urinary acidification, restricted magnesium, increased potassium and taurine

Heart failure - Low sodium and added potassium

Gastrointestinal conditions - Highly digestible, source of MCT's

Kidney failure - added potassium, restricted protein, low phosphorous, reduced sodium

Obesity management - low fat, reduced calorie, urine acidification, increased fiber, high complet carbohydrates, source of soluable fiber
