Senior Wellness

SENIOR WELLNESS PROGRAM AT DISCOUNT PRICE!

Animals seven years and older are considered senior citizens.  The good news is that life expectancies for dogs and cats are increasing due to good nutrition, preventative health care, and recent advances in veterinary medicine.  Seniors are at greater risk for arthritis, obesity, benign and malignant tumors, hearing and vision loss, incontinence, behavioral changes and heart, liver, kidney, and dental disease.  Before these changes are dismissed as "just old age" we recommend an annual senior wellness screening for early disease detection.

The doctors and staff at Seville Animal Hospital have created their very own three tier senior wellness program to fit each patient's needs and their owner's budget. We have a Forever Young - Silver, Forever Young - Gold and Forever Young - Platinum package to choose from.

Our goal is to help improve the senior pet's quality of life by preventing or atleast slowing down the progress of common old age problems. If you have a senior pet, he or she is invited to spend the day at Seville Animal Hospital to participate the FOREVER YOUNG program.

Silver Package: Senior Examination, Complete Blood Count, Serum Chemistry Profile, Serum T4 and Urinalysis with Sedimentation

Gold Package: Senior Examination, Complete Blood Count, Serum Chemistry Profile, Serum T4, Urinalysis with Sedimentation, ERD test, IOP Screening (Canine Only), BP Screening (Feline Only) and ECG.

Platinum Package: Senior Examination, Complete Blood Count, Serum Chemistry Profile, Michigan Thyroid Panel, Urinalysis with Sedimentation, ERD test, IOP Screening (Canine Only), BP Screening (Feline Only), ECG and Radiographs of the Abdomen and Thorax.

  • Physical Examination –  A good physical examination provides the veterinarian with a wealth of knowledge.  It is the critical first step in collecting information regarding a patient’s health.  Subtle changes in weight, mucous membrane color, gait, heart and lung sounds and abdominal tension can indicate very serious problems, yet pets often act normally at home.
  • Complete blood count – A CBC provides detailed information on red blood counts (RBCs), white blood counts (WBCs) and platelets.  The total WBC and differential (individual cell counts) can indicate infection, leukemia, stress, inflammation, or an inability to fight infection.  Low platelets can indicate a bleeding problem.
  • Serum Chemistry Profile - This test is actually testing at least fourteen different values that reflect the health of all the major organ systems, including but not limited to the liver, kidneys and pancreas.
  • Serum T4 – This test measures the main thyroid hormone in the bloodstream.  An imbalance in this hormone affects metabolism and can lead to weight gain or loss, recurrent infections (including the skin and ears), abnormal blood pressure, heart disease and multiple organ problems.  Fortunately, thyroid imbalances are very treatable.
  • Complete Urinalysis – The urine contains by-products from many organs such as the kidneys, liver and pancreas.  Abnormal levels of these by-products can indicate disease including diabetes, liver, and kidney disease.
  • Early Renal Disease - ERD – The ERD test detects small amounts of protein in the urine which indicates the presence of kidney disease earlier than bloodwork.
  • Intraocular Pressure - IOP (Canine) - A digital tonometer will measure the pressure inside the eyes.  Early detection and treatment of glaucoma may prevent or delay blindness.   Abnormal eye pressures can indicate the presence of both systemic and primary eye disease.  Both increased and decreased pressures cause pain and can lead to ulcers, blindness and potentially loss of the eye.  Early detection and treatment of abnormal pressures minimize pain and protects against the adverse effects of abnormal eye pressures.
  • Blood Pressure Screening – BP (Feline) – High blood pressure is common in aging cats due to the high incidence of primary heart disease, hyperthyroidism and kidney disease in these pets.  If left untreated, high blood pressure leads to blindness and organ damage.
  • Electrocardiogram – ECG – This test detects changes in heart rate and electrical rhythm, as well as heart enlargement and certain electrolyte abnormalities.  Oftentimes, these changes go unnoticed and can lead to premature and sudden death in pets.
  • MSU Thyroid Panel – The “Gold Standard” test for assessing thyroid function.  This test is a more comprehensive test to diagnose thyroid disease than serum T4 alone.  It provides more information regarding the patient’s immune status as it relates to thyroid disease and more easily identifies those patients with thyroid disease that are more difficult to diagnose.
  • Radiographs (X-rays) - Radiographs screen for soft tissue changes such as organ enlargement and masses as well as bony changes such as arthritis.

The physical examination and these laboratory tests provide an excellent general picture of the health of your pet.  However, in the event that a problem is identified, further testing may be recommended.  Please be assured that we will discuss our recommendations with you and provide you with an estimate for such services before proceeding with any additional diagnostics or treatment.  We welcome any questions or concerns you may have regarding your pet’s health.
