Pet News brought to you by Seville Animal Hospital ...................February 2011

February is National Dental Awareness Month

Whether your pet is large or small, it's overall health depends on the condition of his teeth.  The American Veterinary Dental Association recommends that pet owners follow these three basic steps to improve their pet's oral and overall health.

Step 1:  Take your pet to the vet for a dental exam.  Don't wait for his annual check up if you suspect a problem.

Step 2:  Begin a dental care regimen at home.  Digestion begins in the mouth, where foods are broken down by chewing.  Hard, fibrous foods are useful in keeping the teeth healthy, but a good diet may not be enough.  The use of enzymatic products on a daily basis will help decrease the accumulation of plaque on your pet's teeth.

Step 3:  Schedule regular veterinary dental checkups and professional cleanings when recommended.
