Cold Weather Hazards
- Avoid bones - small turkey and ham bones around the holidays can lodge in the throat, stomach and intestinal tract. In addition, fats, gravies and poultry skins can cause severe gastrointestinal problems!
- Holiday plants - Holly, mistletoe, poinsettia and other popular holiday plants can be toxic if eaten!
- Electrical cords - Holiday lights mean more fun things to catch puppies and kittens attention. Make sure they are out of reach of these curious creatures!
- Christmas trees - Poorly secured trees can fall on rambunctious pets!
- Pine needles - Ingested pine needles can puncture an animals intestines!
- Christmas tree water - Many of the additives used to keep christmas trees fresh can be toxic if swallowed!
- Sweets - holiday candy - Particularly pure bakers chocolate, which contains theobromine and can be hazardous or fatal to pets!
- Alcohol - Unattended alcoholic beverages can be extremely dangerous if consumed by cats and dogs!
- Ornaments - Oh how much fun these are to the curious creatures that we love! Sharp or breakable ornaments should be kept well out of reach of curious paws and mouths!
- Tinsel, yarn and ribbon - Linear foreign bodies can become stuck in an animal's intestinal tract, causing blockage or perforation of the intestinal wall!
- ANTIFREEZE POISONING - THIS SWEET TASTING SUBSTANCE CAUSES FATAL PROBLEMS IF UNTREATED! TO BE ON THE SAFER SIDE USE AN ANIMAL SAFE ANTIFREEZE WHEN NECESSARY AND ALL ANTIFREEZE SPILLS SHOulD BE SPRAYED DOWN WITH A LARGE AMOUNT OF WATER! NOTE: NOT ALL ANIMAL SAFE ANTIFREEZE PRODUCTS ARE TRulY 100% SAFE!!!!!
- Make sure outside dogs and cats have shelter from harsh weather conditions. Bring pets inside or put in a garage or barn when temperatures outside are unbearable!
- Make sure your pet's outside water bowls are not frozen!
